Tips for Managing Emotions

By : Kemelia binti Omar K.B.;P.A.

Emotion is a characteristic of the human soul that exhibits strong feelings that originate from a person's psychological (mental) angle and emotions can occur instinctively depending on a situation. For example emotions like love, anger, sadness, fear and worry.

Emotional management does not mean denying or ignoring those emotions. However, it needs to be acknowledged and controlled well.

There are some simple tips for managing emotions that can be practiced.

1. Calm down

You need to practice proper breathing techniques so that you feel more relieved and calm. For example, take a deep breath and exhale slowly for a count of 8.

The correct breathing technique is able to release negative emotions that have just been experienced quickly and is very helpful if you experience panic, anxiety and fear. In addition, breathing regularly can increase the level of emotional well-being, mind and body.

2. Express Feelings

Feelings should not be hidden but should be shared with trusted people such as family members and close friends. When you are able to express your feelings to trusted people, the percentage of stress experienced will also decrease. Trust me! There are still people who love and care about us.

3. Go out for a walk

Enjoying the scenery of nature can act as a therapy that can help reduce the stress experienced by a person. Being in a green and peaceful environment makes one's soul calmer. It feels as if all the burdens you carry disappear when you are surrounded by beautiful nature. Compared to the time spent looking at a cell phone or computer all day long, when you go out and walk a lot to see the scenery, the brain will be more developed.

4. Think Positively

You need to be sensitive to what is happening in your mind, whether positive or negative. Try to train yourself to say positive things to yourself and avoid saying negative things. You can also give yourself a chance to joke or laugh. This is because laughter can also provide peace and reduce a person's emotional burden.

5. Journal Writing

Writing a daily journal is very helpful for controlling thoughts, regulating emotions and teaching how to express feelings. This is because, when you are in a stressful situation, pouring out your emotions and feelings in writing can make you feel better. Typically, stress occurs as a result of difficulty understanding the current situation. By writing all the contents of your heart and feelings in a daily journal, it can help make it easier for you to manage the stress experienced.
